Senior receiver Brenen Thompson making smooth adjustment to Bulldog playbook

Normally, transfers face adjustments at their new program and it can take awhile to find their place. But that hasn’t been the case with Mississippi State senior receiver and former Oklahoma transfer Brenen Thompson.
Of course, there are reasons for that. Thompson actually played in Jeff Lebby’s offensive system during his time at Oklahoma. So getting up to speed on the playbook and terminology didn’t take long.
On Monday after training camp, Thompson met with the media to share his thoughts on camp thus far among other topics:
Q: How do you feel the receivers are communicating with the quarterbacks?
Thompson: I think we’re starting to get it even more day by day. Obviously, reps come with that but it’s been good.
Q: Is there anything from the spring that you knew y’all had to work on?
Thompson: I would say the details of everything. There’s a lot of new people here in the spring. So all of them didn’t understand the playbook fully because it’s a lot. But I think even more now, it’s just transforming it into this fall camp like guys knowing what they’re doing. We’re playing faster and stronger. I’m excited to see where it goes.

Q: Who are some of the guys that have helped you with the playbook on offense?
Thompson: I’m kind of the one who helps everyone else with it, to be honest with you. I know it like the back of my hand. So it’s been good for me to help the younger guys and kind of help some of those guys who don’t understand it as much. It’s a different game, it’s college. Guys either come from a different place or high school. Some things change, the speed of the game changes, so just helping guys with that.
Q: The transfers of this group have gotten most of the headlines. But what have you seen from the younger guys like Ricky Johnson and Sanfrisco Magee?
Thompson: Those two guys have been consistent since the spring, to be honest. The other guy I’d throw in there is Jordan Mosley. I feel like he’s had a great first four days. All three of them have had amazing days. All of them are growing each day and I’m excited to see where they’re going to go.
Q: What have you seen from the cornerbacks trying to defend this group? Which ones have caught your attention?
Thompson: I think DeAgo (Brumfield) does. I think Jett (Jefferson) catches my attention. I think they’re all pretty consistent right now. Obviously, they’re all rotating so I am going against different guys each day. It’s competing. I love it. We get out here every day and we compete and that’s what it’s about.
Q: From a competitive standpoint, is there a corner you like to compete against?
Thompson: I think my favorite is Kelley (Jones) just because of how long he is. That’s where I’m working my game as far as using my hands go. Some of my weaknesses he’s able to attack. So I am able to work that and perfect that as we go against each other. Obviously, I think he’s the fastest player on the defensive side. I think I’m certainly the fastest on the offensive side. So, it’s battling every day makes it so much fun.
Q: Who would win in a foot race between you and Kelley?
Thompson: Definitely me.
Q: So from the playbook at Oklahoma, not much has changed here?
Thompson: Not at all, no sir.
