Brenen Thompson named Mississippi State representative for Conerly Trophy

In the middle of the best season of his football career, Mississippi State wide receiver Brenen Thompson is set to represent the Bulldogs for the top award in Mississippi.
Thompson was named the Bulldogs’ choice for the CSpire Conerly Trophy Award which will be given to the state’s best collegiate football player. Also up for the award will be Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss and Southern Miss QB Braylon Braxton along with representatives from every four-year college in the state.
A transfer from Oklahoma, Thompson has had a breakthrough under Jeff Lebby in the veer and shoot offense. Thompson has reeled in 47 catches for a team-high 868 yards and six touchdowns.
Not only are those numbers career highs for Thompson, they’ve blown out of the water what he did in his previous three seasons combined. After starting his career at Texas in 2022, Thompson was brought in by Lebby at Oklahoma when the coach was the offensive coordinator for the Sooners in 2022-23.

Thompson had a combined 27 catches for 503 yards and four touchdowns. He’ll have a chance either in the Battle for the Golden Egg against Ole Miss next week or with the addition of a bowl game to be State’s fourth 1,000-yard receiver in school history. Georgia transfer Anthony Evans is also in the middle of a revolutionary year with 63 catches for 751 yards and four touchdowns.
The Bulldogs have had nine winners of the Conerly Trophy since its inception in 1996, but have not had a winner since 2019 when RB Kylin Hill won the award.
The Conerly Trophy will be awarded on Tuesday, December 2 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson. At the ceremony, the 13th Annual Kent Hull Trophy will also be awarded to the top offensive lineman in the state. The Bulldogs have won the Hull Trophy seven times in its first 12 years with starting RT Albert Reese being named the winner last season.
