Following a strong showing in relief of quarterback Blake Shapen, Mississippi State’s Kamario Taylor has earned SEC Co-Freshman of the Week honors.

Taylor earned the honor with Kentucky QB Cutter Boley.

The Noxubee County native entered the game early in the third quarter after Shapen left with a suspected head injury. In that drive, Taylor would deliver a 45-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Evans. He finished 2-for-5 for 40 yards and had six rushes for 55 yards and another score.

Shapen came back in the game late in the third quarter and threw an interception, but he finished the game 8-of-14 in his last three drives and led State to three-straight scoring drives. It would lead to a 38-35 comeback win.

“It’s huge for him, his development, his growth,” Lebby said of Taylor after the game. “I’ve continued to talk about making sure I’m putting him in positions of success as we move this thing forward. That’s important to me. But for him being able to get inside of a huge game and be inside some big moments and go do what he was able to do I think speaks to him as he’s continued to prepare the right way.”

It’s been a solid year for Taylor when he’s gotten his opportunities. Playing behind the veteran Shapen, Taylor is 5-of-9 for 87 yards and three touchdowns and has rushed 22 times for 147 yards and two scores on the ground.

Taylor played at nearby Noxubee County and was a four-star quarterback nationally. Taylor was ranked four stars by every publication with On3 ranking him as the No. 41 player overall, the No.7 QB in the country and the second best player in the state of Mississippi.

The Bulldogs (5-4, 1-4 SEC) are looking to keep things rolling this week as they host No. 5 Georgia on Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN.
