Catcher is a major position of need for Mississippi State this offseason in the transfer portal and the Diamond Dawgs appear to have a frontrunner for the starting spot.

Brian O’Connor has landed a commitment from Seton Hall’s Kevin Milewski, the talented backstop announced on social media Saturday. The 6’5, 235-pound sophomore from Connecticut was recently on campus in Starkville and he made the call over the weekend to join the program.

Milewski made a major jump during his sophomore year as he took over as the full-time starter for the Pirates. After starting in just eight games and batting .138 with four hits as a freshman, Milewski would start in 52 of the team’s 54 games this year.

As the team’s backstop, Milewski batted .303 with a slugging percentage of .580. He had 57 hits, 16 home runs, seven doubles and a triple while driving in 58 more runs for the team. Milewski also walked 30 times on the year. Additionally, Milewski caught eight base stealers and had a .979 fielding percentage behind the plate. His work earned him Second-Team All-Big East honors by the league.

A native of Wallingford, Conn., Milewski played his high school baseball at Notre Dame-West Haven. He was First-Team All-Southern Connecticut Conference his junior and senior season and was ranked as the No. 8 player in the state by PrepBaseball Report.

Milewski is the second primary catcher currently on the roster for the Bulldogs as State had veteran Joe Powell graduate and Ross Highfill, Steven Spalitta and Jackson Owen all hit the transfer portal. Owen announced this week that he was withdrawing from the portal and returning to State for his final year. Virginia transfer Chone James can play catcher among other positions.

This is the 10th portal commitment for the Diamond Dawgs joining Virginia transfers LHP Tomas Valincius, OF James Nunnallee, UTL Chone James, OF Aidan Teel and OF Vytas Valincius from Illinois, MIF Ryder Woodson from North Carolina State, 1B/OF Blake Bevis of Ball State and RHP Maddox Webb from The Citadel.
