Less than a month ago, Baylor (Tenn.) School’s Kolby Barrett joined Mississippi State’s Class of 2026. A couple of weekends ago, the On3 three-star safety prospect got a look at his future coaches and teammates.

Barrett was one of several Bulldog commitments taking in their official visit on June 13-15 and it also served as a good opportunity for Barrett to get comfortable on campus.

“The visit was great and it was good to be back,” Barrett recalled. “It was good to see some of the other guys in the class that are also committed. It was also good to catch up with the coaches again.”

Barrett also got to receive advice from some of Mississippi State’s current players at his position. He also noted of his time around head coach Jeff Lebby and enjoyed hearing Lebby’s thoughts on the upcoming season.

“I was with several players like Stonka Burnside and a couple of safeties,” remarked Barrett. “That is who I mainly spent my time with. They answered a lot of questions for me. Then Coach Lebby showed me with the whole experience how much of a family it is. He showed me that everyone is bought in this year and that it will be different moving forward.”

And regarding the weekend, being able to hang out with his future teammates and hearing the coaches’ plans for him was the highlight of Barrett’s weekend.

“The best part to me was the time I spent with the players now that I will be with soon,” added the 6-foot-2 and 190-pound Barrett. “I was learning from them and then just going over stuff with the coaches is something else I really enjoyed.”

In particular, Barrett learned more about his future position at Mississippi State from his talks with safeties coach Matt Barnes.

“Me and Coach Barnes already have a great relationship,” Barrett explained. “So during the weekend we just went over some stuff again. He talked to me specifically about where I will be playing and things of that nature. He believes I could be at any of their three safety positions.”

And the same feelings were shared during his time spent with Lebby.

“It is always good to catch up with Coach Lebby,” noted Barrett. “It’s always a good time to talk with him. He said he was excited about getting me up there soon and he likes my future there.”

Like several other commitments in the class, Barrett is on track to graduate high school in December in order to enroll at Mississippi State in January.
