Diamond Dawgs land America East Player of the Year in SS Drew Wyers

Mississippi State has a potential contender for shortstop in 2026.
Brian O’Connor snagged a big portal addition on Wednesday as Mississippi State has landed Bryant’s Drew Wyers. The rising senior comes to Starkville after having a monster junior season for the other Bulldogs. The news was reported by Pro Baseball Radar on X.
The America East Player of the Year, Wyers was a Semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award as the top shortstop in America. He batted an amazing .407 during 45 games over the course of his junior season and became just the third player in school history to bat over .400.
Wyers had 59 hits on the season despite missing the first three weeks of the season due to injury. He added 42 runs scored, hit 11 home runs, had 11 doubles and drove in 50 RBI. He also had a slugging percentage of .710 with an on base percentage of .521 and he struck out just 17 times in 145 at bats while walking 26 times. Wyers was also strong in the field with a .959 fielding percentage at SS, committing seven errors in 112 attempts.
The State coaching staff has regional connections with Wyers as he hails from Columbus, N.J. He played his high school baseball at Northern Burlington County Regional High School.

This will be Wyers’ fourth school during his career as he began at Stetson in 2023. As a true freshman, Wyers started at third base for Stetson and batted .260 with 25 hits, five doubles and two home runs. His numbers went up in ASUN play as he batted .370.
After that season, Wyers transferred to Manahattan and was second-team All-MAAC as a starter in 52 games at third. Wyers had 49 free bases at the plate and batted .286 with 14 doubles and eight home runs. He fielded .948 defensively.
The 6’2, 200-pounder adds more depth to the State lineup and middle infield. The Bulldogs had already pulled in North Carolina State sophomore Ryder Woodson and Virginia sophomore Chone James for likely work at SS and 2B respectively. Wyers is the 15th transfer portal commitment for O’Connor in his first year in Starkville.
