Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we look at a junior college transfer lineman that was a big win for the Bulldogs on the recruiting trail.

71 Days: No. 71, Junior OT Saquon Miles

Miles is another success story out of the state of Mississippi’s junior college system as he went from an under the radar high school prospect to a hot commodity inside the SEC last season.

A 6’5, 320-pound tackle from Greenville, Ala., Miles landed in Raymond and played his first two season with Hinds Community College. He began to grab attention from schools during his freshman season and then became a massive prospect for teams in the summer of last year.

The Bulldogs were a team that always seemed to be at the top of his list and Lebby tried to lock Miles down in the summer. Instead, it was a dogfight for the talented blocker all the way to signing day as he had offers from Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn, Colorado, Miami and others.

State did grab a commitment from Miles shortly before signing day but that decision never felt like it was concrete as teams continued to have his ear. The Rebels were the team that provided the most heartburn for State leading up to signing day and Lane Kiffin’s staff was confident that he would choose Ole Miss after they got him to campus for an official prior to signing day.

Despite the RPM flip picks that came in and the confidence from the Rebel media, Miles would stick with the Bulldogs and he landed in Starkville in January. The Bulldogs landed the No. 1 JUCO tackle in the country by the On3 Industry rankings, and he was rated the No. 9 player overall in JUCO as he just missed a four-star ranking.

Over the course of the spring practices, Miles got valuable reps as he hopes to compete for a tackle spot in year one. He didn’t make enough of a move to feel confident that he makes a major impact this year just yet, but that doesn’t mean that he will not make a jump in training camp. The competition will be heavy for Phill Loadholt’s team as the coach added some potential challengers.
