Backup Bulldog center Brennan Smith set to enter portal
Mississippi State’s backup center is on the move for a final season of eligibility.
Brennan Smith announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will be finding a new home for his fifth year. Smith played in three games earlier in the season but would sit the majority of the SEC schedule and will play out his eligibility elsewhere. He posted his decision on X.
“First off, I would like to thank God for blessing me to be in this position. I want to thank all of the coaches and players who helped me continue to grow on and off the field. With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. Thank you, Mississippi State.”
Smith was brought in from the transfer portal out of UTEP after the spring when the Bulldogs were looking for competition at the center position for veteran Canon Boone. He was an 11-game starter for the Miners as a junior with 10 of those being at left guard and one at center.
The first three seasons of Smith’s career came at Austin Peay. After playing two games as a true freshman in 2021, Smith became a regular starter for the Governors in 2022. Smith started in eight games at right tackle and played in 10 games total that season and then was a starter in every game in 2023 before entering the transfer portal.

A native of Pensacola, Fla., and a former standout at Escambia High School, the 6’3, 320-pound Smith played in three of the first four games this year. Smith logged reps against Southern Miss, Alcorn State and Northern Illinois but hadn’t played since. He now will head to the portal to try and get one more year of action.
With Smith’s exit, that does leave the Bulldogs with just Boone and fellow transfer Koby Keenum at the center position but State has been in that spot for most of the season as well.
The transfer portal does not officially open until January 2 but several Bulldog reserve players have announced their intentions to enter. The most notable to this point has been WR Jordan Mosley and Safety Stonka Burnside.
