Last year was supposed to be the end of DeAgo Brumfield’s college career and the cornerback was looking to make it his best season yet.

Brumfield had worked his way up from NAIA at Campbellsville University to the FBS at Memphis and got an opportunity in the SEC at Mississippi State. For the first time in his career, however, injuries would plague the defender last season.

“It was super frustrating. I’ve never been injured in my life. I had never missed college practices or no college games, so that was totally different for me and very mentally challenging,” Brumfield said. “Coach always tells me that grit is the main thing that makes a successful person successful. I was just trying to be gritty.”

After missing the first few games of the season, Brumfield stepped in for four games in SEC play and made 14 tackles with an interception and 0.5 tackle for loss. After those four games, however, he couldn’t get back on the field with injuries taking a toll.

A bright spot to that meant that he gets one more year to make it right.

Brumfield has been working harder to make sure this year is the one that is his strongest. Since the spring, that’s been his mindset on a daily basis as he attacks year two with Jeff Lebby and his teammates in Starkville. Now, it’s closing in on game week with Southern Miss first on the docket.

“Practice has been good preparing to go up against another opponent for once instead of doing so much camp stuff against each other,” Brumfield said. “It’s kind of a mix of both, but it’s been a good week of practice so far getting ready. This is my last fall camp. I enjoy fall camp, but it’s way more of a grind than it is during the season. I like this a little more.”

State corners have a lot to prove but are ready to prove it

The Bulldogs lost, arguably, their most productive cornerback when Brice Pollock entered the transfer portal for Texas Tech, but there’s been talent emerging in the group.

Sophomore Kelley Jones is back after doing good things for the Bulldogs last season. Brumfield has also been impressed with junior college transfer Jett Jefferson out of East Central CC. With transfer players Dwight Lewis and Jayven Williams along with four-star freshman Kyle Johnson, it’s a group that has steadily made each other better.

“It’s been good competition. I told my guys after the last scrimmage that they’ve made me so much better this camp. We’re raising each other’s level and you can’t slack off because other guys are playing good. I love the competition in our room.”

Brumfield enters his final season with a point to prove for himself, but he also believes that the Bulldog defense is going to prove its own points.

A year after State struggled to stop opposing teams, this version of the Bulldogs should be better due to the added talent from the transfer portal. Brumfield has already seen it show up in the preseason and they’ll have a chance to show the rest of the SEC as the season begins next Saturday.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in this team. Last year coming into the team, it was the SEC with new players on the team and I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t like some of the stuff that was going on in the locker room. This year, we’ve been brothers. We’ve connected more, everybody is gelling together, the competition is better. We’re brothers and I like it for us.”
