Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we look at a rising sophomore safety poised to compete for playing time this year.

19 Days: No. 19, So. Safety Cyrus Reyes

Bulldog fans weren’t sure what to expect from Reyes when he was a late addition to the class last season, but he’s been tough to keep away from the field already.

Prior to the hiring of Lebby and safeties coach Matt Barnes, Reyes’ best offer was at Memphis and the Texas native had been committed to the Tigers since the summer. When Barnes was picked up by Lebby to coach the safeties, the coach wanted Reyes to be a part of the maroon and white. After visiting Starkville just before signing day, he made the decision to switch it up and became a Bulldog.

Reyes was a two-star recruit by Rivals but the State coaches believe he will far outperform that ranking before his time is done at State. At Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, Reyes was a Captain his junior and senior seasons. Over his three seasons on the varsity, he made 209 tackles with five interceptions and five pass deflections. His final year, Reyes had 91 tackles and a pick.

Despite being overlooked among his classmates, Reyes was one of the most-used freshmen on the team a season ago. Only Kai McClendon joined him among true freshmen that played in every game as Reyes made a name for himself on special team and in scout team at practices. He had five tackles on the season and got plenty of experience that will benefit him moving forward.

Heading into his sophomore season, that playing time is expected to increase for Reyes. He’s now been through two springs and two training camps and should be ready to contribute more on the defensive side of the ball this season.
