Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we look at a transfer defensive lineman searching for some new life with the Bulldogs.

42 Days: No. 42, So. DT Darron Reed

Reed enters his first season with State looking for new opportunity with the Bulldogs and, in turn, they’re looking for a lift up front.

A former four-star recruit out of Carver High School in Georgia, the pedigree is there for Reed. He was ranked as the No. 64 player nationally and the No. 9 defensive lineman by On3 while earning the No. 5 spot in the state of Georgia.

Among the teams that were vying for his services were LSU, Auburn, Clemson, Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas A&M, Miami and others and it was easy to see why. Standing 6’4, 285 pounds, Reed was a standout for Carver and racked up 8.0 sacks as a senior before committing to play ball for the Tigers.

He played in one game his first season while redshirting in 2023 and then got into the game to play twice his redshirt freshman year. With the lack of available reps coming his way in those seasons, Reed decided to hit the transfer portal to see what opportunity was out there for him.

State and Deion Sanders’ Colorado team were the ones doing the battling while others came calling for the talented defender. Ultimately, Reed chose to stay in the south and inside the SEC as he would commit to David Turner and the Bulldogs.

Reed came to Starkville in the spring and went through practices with the team and is now working towards hitting the field this training camp. He’s created some much needed depth up front for a team that was lacking it badly in 2024 and should push for some reps as he enters his third year of ball.
