100 Day Bulldog Countdown: 30 Days - No. 30, LB Montrell Chapman

Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.
After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.
As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.
Today, we look at a Mississippi linebacker who is getting a shot to play for the home state school.
30 Days: No. 30, Jr. Linebacker Montrell Chapman
It happened quickly for Chapman but he was thankful to get the opportunity to play in the SEC and for his home state in Starkville.
After a huge season with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College as one of junior college’s best linebackers, Chapman grabbed several offers late in the process. The Bulldogs were one of those in December after the first signing period. Just two weeks after the offer from Coleman Hutzler, Chapman signed with State.

Chapman picked the Bulldogs over Arizona, East Carolina and many others and he also took an official visit to Ole Miss prior to his visit to State. Ultimately, he wanted to stay close to home and the Bulldogs fit what he was looking for in a college.
A former standout at talent-rich South Panola, Chapman went JUCO at MGCCC. Following a solid first season with a different group of Bulldogs, he had a huge 2024 with 74 tackles and 5.0 tackles for loss and ended his two seasons with over 100 tackles combined, 8.0 TFL, four pass breakups, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
He finished as the No. 59 player in JUCO by On3 and the No. 4 LB in the country. He arrived in Starkville in the spring and got a head start on working to get playing time. He enters training camp on Thursday working with the Mike linebackers.
