100-Day Bulldog Countdown: 70 Days, No. 70 OT Breyden Turnage

Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.
After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.
As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.
Today, we look at a promising freshman lineman that could be a steal for the Bulldogs long term.
70 Days: No. 70, Freshman OT Breyden Turnage
This time a year ago, Turnage was preparing to play his first year of high school football. Yes, that’s right, he just started playing football one season ago.
A former baseball prospect and a basketball player, Turnage’s size was tailor made for the offensive line. With good feet and hands and a 6’7, 300-pound frame, it was a no-brainer to give the gridiron a shot. It turned out to be the right decision.

Turnage prepped at Dyersburg High School in Tennessee and his work on the football field started to garner some attention from around the country. Memphis had hopes of sliding Turnage under the radar as he committed to the home state school during the year, but MSU, Florida State and Ole Miss would suddenly jump into the picture and muddy up the recruitment.
The Bulldogs had their eye on Turnage throughout the year and built a strong relationship with him to get him to take an official visit the week before Thanksgiving. After that trip, he was sold on joining Lebby’s program.
Due to the raw ability of Turnage, he could be a major factor for the Bulldogs with the right development, but that will take time. Fans shouldn’t expect to see him on the field right away, but he can get valuable reps and shape his body this year with Lebby’s staff and his line coach Phil Loadholt.
