Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we look at a rising standout on the defensive line.

46 Days: No. 46, Sophomore DE Joseph Head

State has had a whole lot of success in recruiting going to Holmes County and building defensive talent over the years.

Head is one of those that have a chance to leave as one of the better players of that group as he heads into year three with the Bulldogs. A former Rivals three-star and the No. 13 player in the state of Mississippi, Head always held State above the rest of the pecking order and he committed to the Bulldogs over instate rival Ole Miss when Mike Leach was coaching State in 2021.

At Holmes County, Head emerged during his junior season when he racked up 89 tackles and 12.0 sacks. He followed that up with 70 tackles, 21.0 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hurries and 10.0 sacks. When he got to Starkville, however, Head needed a year to get in the weightroom and prepare for the SEC.

Head played in one game that season but got a chance to begin getting his feet wet last year. With the Bulldogs struggling with depth, Head earned playing time in 11 of the 12 games and made 10 tackles with 1.5 TFL and 0.5 sack.

That experience that Head earned now should have him ready for an even bigger role in 2025. The Bulldogs will have much needed depth and talent improvements on the line and will make for an even tougher competition in the fall, but Head is hoping to see his production rise.
