100-Day Bulldog Countdown: 80 Days, No. 80 - K Kyle Ferrie and WR AJ Lewis Jr.

Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.
After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.
As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.
Today, we’re looking at a key figure on special teams and a freshman wide receiver looking to make his mark.
80 Days: No. 80, Junior K Kyle Ferrie
There are very few players on the roster that love wearing the maroon and white like Ferrie.
A native of Searcy, Ark., Ferrie has been watching the Bulldogs for years and he got a chance to accomplish his dream of getting to play in the SEC when the Bulldogs came calling a few years ago. Ferrie was one of the most accomplished kickers in Arkansas high school history when he played for Harding Academy.
Ferrie broke the state record when he totaled 313 points over the course of his career, and he has three of the top 10 kicks in terms of distance. His 37 field goals and 72-yard punt are also state record.
When Ferrie came to Starkville, he would earn the starting kicker job in 2023 after UCLA transfer Nick Barr-Mira went down with an injury in fall camp. Right away, Ferrie earned Freshman of the Week honors in the league against Southeastern Louisiana when he made all six of his extra points and two field goals, both which were more than 40 yards.
Ferrie grabbed Freshman of the Week honors again late in the season against Southern Miss with four made field goals. He finished the season 16-of-22 with a long of 49 yards. Last year, Ferrie won the job outright and went 10-of-12 with a long of 47 yards. Through the first two years, he’s now 26-of-34 with just one missed extra point as he climbs the charts as one of the best in school history.

This year, Ferrie is set to hit year three as the Bulldog starter and have his best season yet.
No. 80, Freshman WR AJ Lewis Jr.
It was a relatively late decision for Lewis in his recruitment, but the Hattiesburg native chose to stay home and play for the Bulldogs.
Early in the process, Lewis picked up offers from the instate schools from State, Ole Miss and Southern Miss and he also grabbed offers from Houston, Missouri and Arkansas. At Oak Grove, he was ranked the No. 18 player in the state of Mississippi by the On3 Industry rankings and was the No. 119 wide receiver in the country.
As a senior, Lewis grabbed 32 catches for 380 yards and eight touchdowns and he flew under the radar after he once had a busy recruitment. The Bulldogs ramped up their efforts for his services late in the season and he would commit in November.
Lewis got a head start on his classmates as he got to campus in January and competed during spring practices. The chances of him playing in year one are dependent on just how well he does in the fall practices, but his hard work has already gotten him ahead of the curve.
