State safety Tony Mitchell plans to enter transfer portal
After just one season in Starkville, safety Tony Mitchell is on the move.
The former Alabama safety will enter the portal when it opens on January 2 according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Mitchell is coming off of a season where he played in 11 games and made 25 total tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss. His best game was a six-tackle performance against Georgia in which has had 2.0 TFL. 14 of his tackles and 3.0 of his TFL came in the final three games of the regular season for State.
A former four-star prospect and Under Armour All-American out of Thompson High School in Alabama, Mitchell was ranked as the No. 114 player national and the ninth best safety in the 2023 signing class when he signed with Alabama. He chose the home state Crimson Tide over Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Texas A&M, LSU and many others.
Mitchell played in seven games for the Tide in 2023 and had a tackle as he played mostly special teams. Prior to his first season, Mitchell was arrested for marijuana possession after evading police at a speed more than 140 miles per hour. After going through community service and receiving probation, he rejoined the team and took part in his freshman season.

After entering the transfer portal, Mitchell landed at East Mississippi Community College for the 2024 season and played for head coach Buddy Stephens. Mitchell had 16 tackles and a fumble recovery in seven games and earned four-star status as the Rivals Industry Ranking had him as the nation’s third best junior college prospect and the number one safety in the country.
While Mitchell played behind Isaac Smith, his impact was growing on the Bulldog roster and it will be a hit to the depth of the secondary heading into the offseason.
