Bulldogs and Vols set for afternoon showdown inside Davis Wade Stadium

As anticipated as Mississippi State’s week two game against Arizona State was, there will be even more build towards September 27 and the Bulldogs’ SEC opener against No. 15 Tennessee.
The Bulldogs and Volunteers will clash inside Davis Wade Stadium next Saturday and the game is now set for 3:15 p.m. on SEC Network, the SEC announced on Monday. It’s part of what’s a stacked day of college football in the SEC with games like LSU/Ole Miss, Auburn/Texas A&M and Alabama/Georgia.
Though UT dropped a heartbreaking overtime ball game to Georgia in 44-41 fashion, it’s still a team that very much is in the running for a playoff spot this season again. The Vols were a field goal away from triumph over UGA on Saturday but a wide-right miss sent the game to OT where the other Bulldogs would find a way to escape with a victory.
Through the first three games, UT has possessed one of the best offenses in the country and averaged 53 points per game in wins over Syracuse and East Tennessee as well as that narrow loss to UGA.

Quarterback Joey Aguilar transferred in after the spring as UCLA and the Vols traded QBs when Nico Iamaleava left for Southern California. Aguilar looks the part of an upgrade so far with 906 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions through three games while completing 66% of his passes. The Vols also have two rushers over 200 yards as Star Thomas and DeSean Bishop are averaging seven yards per rush with four total touchdowns between them.
UT dropped in the polls this past week but have a chance to steady themselves again this week when they host UAB inside Neyland Stadium. The Bulldogs are taking on Northern Illinois this Saturday at 3:15 p.m. on SEC Network and a win would set up a hyped battle to open conference play for State against the Vols.
A victory this weekend has the Bulldogs 4-0 for the first time since 2014. It would be just the eighth time in school history joining 1919, 1944, 1945, 1965, 1999, 2012 and 2014.
