Diamond Dawgs drop series against No. 11 Texas with 5-3 Sunday defeat

Mississippi State had chances to take over Sunday’s game one of the double header but Texas was the one that came through in the clutch.
The No. 11 Longhorns scored three runs with two outs in the second inning and hit a two-run home run in the seventh to surge past the Diamond Dawgs 5-3. The seven-inning win for the Longhorns gave Texas the series.
In a tie game in the top of the seventh, bullpen pitcher Nate Williams surrendered a two-run home run to Max Belyeu to get the lead. That would hold as pitcher Dylan Volantis closed his second game in as many chances against State.
It was a game of missed chances for MSU. In the first inning, State loaded the bases with two outs and brought in one run with Aaron Downs getting hit by pitch. Nolan Stevens would pop up to end the inning and the 1-0 lead wouldn’t last for long.
Texas came back against Ben Davis and scored three runs with two outs on back-to-back doubles. Davis lasted just 2.2 innings in his starts and gave up three hits, three runs, four walks and a hit batter with two strikeouts.

State’s bullpen kept the Bulldogs in the game as Evan Siary threw 2.1 great innings with just a walk to his credit and five strikeouts. In the sixth, the Bulldogs started to make noise. With two on and one out, Ace Reese would smash a double off the right field wall that would tie the game at three.
Despite that big hit, the Bulldogs couldn’t add on and Nolan Stevens struck out while Aaron Downs flew out to right. Texas took advantage of that in the seventh as Nate Williams allowed two hits with an 0-2 count. The second of those would be a Belyeu homer to right to get the lead.
State got two on base in the last inning but a Hunter Hines pop up ended the threat and gave the series to the Longhorns.
The Diamond Dawgs (13-6, 0-2 SEC) outhit Texas 6-5 but were 1-of-6 with runners in scoring position. Noah Sullivan led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-3 day. Reese was 1-for-4 but had two of the team’s RBI on the double.
Williams was dominant outside of the two hits. He pitched 2.0 innings with five strikeouts.
Game three of the series is set for 4:15.
