It’s the heat of football preseason in SEC country, but that doesn’t mean that basketball isn’t just right around the corner.

Mississippi State’s women are preparing for year four of the Sam Purcell era in Starkville and the Bulldogs have the SEC schedule now finalized. The schedule features home games against the likes of top 25 foes Tennessee, LSU and Kentucky with a challenging road slate at Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas and Tennessee.

The extremely rugged league schedule will be led off by hosting Auburn and new head coach Larry Vickers on New Year’s Day. The Bulldogs will host Sweet 16 team Tennessee on January 6 and then have back-to-back home games against Vanderbilt (January 15) and Kentucky (January 18). Missouri (February 1), Georgia (February 12) and Florida (February 19) will also come to Humphrey Coliseum with State closing out the regular season against Elite 8 squad LSU on March 1.

Life on the road will be difficult for Bulldogs

Road games begin with the Bulldogs taking on six teams that were ranked inside the top 25 at one point last year and five of them made it to at least the Sweet 16. State plays at Oklahoma (January 4) and Ole Miss (January 11) fresh off of those two schools making it to the Sweet 16. The Bulldogs had a marquee win over the Sooners in Starkville last year when they were inside the top 15 and will be looking to get back in the win column against the Rebels and two former players in Debreasha Powe and Diamond DeShields.

Alabama is looking to reload after losing critical pieces and will host the Bulldogs on January 25 while State has a return date with Tennessee on January 29 as the only home-and-home matchup on the schedule.

State will face off with the defending Runners Up for the National Championship as former center Madina Okot and the South Carolina Gamecocks play host on February 5. The Bulldogs will take on a new-look Arkansas team on February 16, travel to see former coach Vic Schaefer and Texas on February 22 and close out the road games at Texas A&M on the 26th.

Purcell and his Bulldogs still have to finalize the non-conference portion of the schedule but have already announced a matchup with Pittsburgh in the ACC/SEC Challenge. State has also landed the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Fla., where they will play Alcorn State and either Middle Tennessee or Providence.

The Bulldogs are breaking in a lot of new faces with the return of just two players from the rotation last year in Destiney McPhaul and Chandler Prater. Purcell brought in five transfer portal players, three high school signees, a junior college transfer and international prospect.
