A veteran Mississippi State bat is headed to the transfer portal.

Catcher Ross Highfill has entered the portal, a source told Maroon and White Daily. Highfill leaves Starkville after three years with the Diamond Dawgs filled with some ups and downs.

Highfill was originally committed to Southern Miss during his standout career at Madison Central but he flipped to the Bulldogs his senior season. In year one under Chris Lemonis, Highfill would play in 39 games with 36 starts at catcher. He batted.231 with 28 hits, nine home runs, eight doubles, 28 RBI and a .521 slugging percentage.

A shoulder injury would plague him in the offseason and he was only able to play in four games as a sophomore but he came back healthy for this season. It was a struggle at time for Highfill as he had a .218 batting average in 45 games with 27 hits, four doubles, three home runs, one triple and 20 RBI. He struck out 44 times to just 11 walks but he did steal 12 bases.

Highfill play catcher for the first part of the schedule and then played some right field for State in the latter part of the season. Defense was an issue behind the plate for him as he had 11 passed balls and teams were 23-of-24 in stolen bases. He ends his State career as a .220 batter with 12 career home runs and 12 doubles.

State has had 11 players that were on the roster that have now hit the transfer portal as new coach Brian O’Connor creates room for an influx of transfer portal talent. The Bulldogs had several transfer prospects on campus on Thursday night for O’Connor’s introduction to the fanbase.

Highfill joins Landis Davila, Gavin Black, Dylan Cupp, Nolan Stevens, Michael O’Brien, Luke Dotson, Robert Fortenberry, Kevin Mannell, Jackson Owen and Steven Spalitta in the portal.
