Brian O’Connor is poised to make waves in his first recruiting class and it’s off to a strong start.

The Diamond Dawgs landed their first commitment of the class on Tuesday morning when lifelong State fan and Meridian native Sullivan Reed made the call. Reed turned down opportunities from around the SEC to stay at home and accomplish a dream of wearing the M over S.

During the last few weeks, Reed had taken visits to State, Florida and Auburn and had Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama also in his final six. Though he had followed through with visits to Gainesville and Auburn after his Labor Day trip to Starkville, he couldn’t stop thinking about his time with O’Connor and the staff at Dudy Noble Field.

Reed always knew that he wanted to be a Diamond Dawg player, but it removed all doubt when he stepped foot inside the stadium and spent time with the coaching staff.

“I took these other visits and really loved them, but I know that I’m capable of playing wherever I want and I know where my heart is – my heart is at Mississippi State,” Reed said. “I want to come play for coach O’Connor and the staff and along with that I get to wear the M over S and continue to build the legacy at Mississippi State. They’re a powerhouse in baseball with the facilities that they have and now they have the best coaching staff in the country.

“They’re super genuine people and tell the truth and I think that’s really important. I feel like they’re going to develop me to be the best player I can be to make sure not only I succeed but the whole team succeeds.”

Reed brings raw power, leadership to State lineup

It’s still relatively early, but Reed has emerged as the top instate recruit in the 2027 class. Perfect Game has him as the No. 22 player in the country and the No. 1 3B in the class.

As a sophomore last season at Lamar School, Reed destroyed the baseball with an incredible .616 average, 61 hits, 54 RBI, 46 runs, 14 doubles, nine home runs and two triples. Additionally, he’s the Raiders’ starting quarterback.

Reed plans to bring a strong natural ability to the baseball diamond, but he’s also bringing a toughness and savvy to the game that is exactly what O’Connor is looking for in his players.

“I’m just going to put my head down and work and lead from the start,” Reed said. “I’m going to continue to work my tail off and nothing is given. This is just the start, and I believe with hard work and trusting the coaches, Mississippi State will be successful during my time there and beyond.”

A long time remains before Reed could potentially hit campus and his trajectory says that he could be a major threat for the MLB Draft. All of that is something that he’ll worry about when the time comes but, for now, he’s laser focused on the relief that has been brought his way by a decision being made.

Reed can now focus on finishing out his high school career and preparing for big things in Starkville.

“I got home to my parents (Monday) night and told them I wanted to do it. A big weight is lifted off of me and I’m super happy and I’m just ready to get to work,” Reed said. “I told Coach Oak last night that I just want to get to campus right now. It’s all God. He gave me the sign that I need to be a Bulldog and I couldn’t be happier.”
