Brian O’Connor is bringing one of his top young pitchers to Starkville.

Virginia LHP Tomas Valincius will transfer to Mississippi State after a strong freshman season with the Cavaliers. A former Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Tennessee, Valincius adds a dynamic left-handed arm to the State pitching staff.

Valincius is a hard-throwing LHP with a fastball that topped out at 97 mph this season. A weekend starter for the Cavs as a true freshman, Valincius was 5-1 with a 4.59 ERA in 12 starts. He threw 64.2 innings, gave up 64 hits, 33 earned runs and just 17 walks with 70 strikeouts.

He threw over 6.0 innings in four of his final five ACC starts. In his final four starts, Valincius gave up three runs or less all four times. His performance down the stretch earned him Freshman All-ACC honors.

Prior to his arrival to Charlottesville, the Lockport, Ill., native played for Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was named Mr. Baseball in the state in 2023 and 2024 for Division II-AA and earned the Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior last year.

He finished his senior year 8-0 with a 1.14 ERA.

Valincius is the first domino to fall in what could be several Virginia players making the move to Starkville. On top of that, older brother Vytas is in the transfer portal from Illinois. Vytas is coming off a huge season where he had a .348 batting average with 71 hits, 14 doubles, seven home runs and 58 RBI on his way to All-Big Ten honors.
