In the first move of what could be a busy offseason for NC State basketball, sophomore forward Jaylon Gibson has entered the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-10, 220-pounder was pressed into an extensive role this past season due to injuries on the NC State frontcourt. Gibson played in 29 games and made four starts. He averaged 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest. He also had 13 blocked shots.

Gibson’s best performance came in his first career start, when he made 6 of 9 shots and finished with a career-high 14 points to go with six rebounds in a home loss to Syracuse. Gibson also had 10 points before fouling out in a road loss at Wake Forest.

Gibson played 17 games as a true freshman, averaging 0.8 points and 0.9 rebounds.

Coming out of Grace Christian School near Raleigh, Gibson originally signed with Wake Forest. After Demon Deacons head coach Danny Manning was fired, Gibson was released from his letter of intent and quickly signed with NC State.

Gibson’s looming departure frees up a scholarship for NC State head coach Kevin Keatts to pursue either a transfer portal addition or unsigned player from either the prep or junior college ranks.

Keatts hinted after the loss at Wake Forest that frontcourt help would be a priority in the offseason.

“Our biggest issue, and it’s not a secret to anybody in the country, we’re just limited at our front court,” Keatts said “I think we have some really good young guards in the program that can be good for us. I’ve said this all along, it’s so tough on guards every night when you don’t have anybody to throw the ball into.

“… One of the things that I want to do is I want to be able to recruit some guys that certainly can help us win. We’re in an unfortunate situation this year because of injuries, but hopefully we can put some guys out there next year we don’t have to worry about that situation.”
