While there may be a new coach on the sideline for North Carolina, the Tar Heels continue to have the number of NC State basketball.

For the second time this year, UNC dominated NC State from tip-to-finish, sweeping the Wolfpack with an 84-74 win Saturday afternoon at PNC Arena in Raleigh. It ended a forgettable year at home for NC State in conference play with a 1-9 record.

Earlier this season, North Carolina rolled to a 100-80 win in Chapel Hill over NC State.

North Carolina started the game on a 20-3 run and never looked back. The closest NC State got the rest of the way was 10 points on two occasions, including the final margin. Multiple spurts by the Wolfpack to temporarily close the margin were met by UNC answering with a run of its own.

NC State was once again beset by cold shooting. The Wolfpack shot 8 of 31 from the field, or 25.8 percent, during the first half.

North Carolina built a lead as much as 25 points at 73-48 with 7:19 left in the game.

NC State freshman guard Terquavion Smith led the Wolfpack with 20 points but made just 7 of 22 shot attempts from the field and was 3 of 11 on three pointers. Sophomore guard Cam Hayes had one of his best shooting performances of the season while coming off the bench, making 4 of 5 three pointers and finishing with 16 points.

For the second consecutive game, NC State was carved up in the post, this time by UNC junior center Armando Bacot. He made 11 of 13 shots and finished with 28 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks.

North Carolina outscored NC State in the paint, 44-28.

The loss knocked NC State’s overall record to 11-18 overall and 4-14 in the ACC. It resumes action Wednesday evening at Wake Forest, a 9 p.m. tipoff on RSN.
