NC State lands commitment from Duke transfer RHP Collins Black

NC State’s transfer portal activity is in full swing. The Wolfpack landed a commitment from Duke transfer right-handed pitcher Collins Black on Monday night, the team’s second addition of the offseason.
Black, a rising sophomore, has three years of eligibility remaining. He allowed nine runs on 11 hits with 18 strikeouts and five walks in 9.1 innings across eight appearances with the Blue Devils.
The Cary, N.C., native’s stats are deceiving after he gave up six runs on five hits in 0.2 innings against Cincinnati in his college debut. After that, Black turned in five straight scoreless outings, including three relief appearances in ACC play. The right-hander impressed with two scoreless frames and three strikeouts against California on March 7, while he also tossed a perfect inning with two strikeouts against NC State on March 29.
With that rough debut removed, Black tossed 8.2 innings in which he gave up six hits with 18 strikeouts and four walks with a 3.12 ERA over his final seven appearances at Duke.
Black has quality stuff on the mound, including a mid 90s fastball and a devastating slider. He boasted a 45 percent swing-and-miss rate with his slider, while he also landed it for a strike 64 percent of the time this past season with the Blue Devils.
