Sears, Husker bats combine for Nebraska baseball's blowout win over New Mexico State

Nebraska baseball continued its best start since 2008 with by picking up its 16th win of the season in dominant fashion on Friday night.

The Huskers blasted New Mexico State 14-2 behind 15 hits including a 3-for-4 showing from Garrett Anglim that featured a home run and five RBIs. Brett Sears was dominant once again and recorded his fifth consecutive quality start.

The senior from Westphalia, Iowa, also posted a Nebraska career-high nine strikeouts in eight innings of work. Six of those eight innings were 1-2-3 frames and Sears faced just two batters over the minimum.

After New Mexico State starter Josh Sharman retired the first six Nebraska batters he faced, the floodgates opened for the Huskers in the third.

Josh Overbeek opened the scoring with the first home run of his Husker career to leadoff the inning. Three straight hits followed including a Dylan Carey double and a two-RBI single from Cayden Brumbaugh. Anglim’s two-out, two-RBI single gave Nebraska a 5-0 lead and firm control of the series opener.

A Cayden Brumbaugh RBI-single and Riley Silva’s RBI bunt made it 7-0 Huskers through four.

Meanwhile, Sears kept the Aggies firmly off balance. The right-hander posted shutdown innings follow each of the Huskers’ crooked numbers.

RBIs from Josh Caron and Overbeek stacked two more runs for Nebraska before the Huskers truly blew the game open in the eighth. Back-to-back walks led into consecutive RBI singles from Caron and Cole Evans. Then with two aboard, Anglim entered the box and crushed a three-run bomb to right as the Huskers’ advantage ballooned to 14-0.

The Aggies plated a pair of runs off of reliever Grant Cleavinger in the ninth, but 14 runs were more than enough for Nebraska to close out the win.

Nebraska left just five runners on base, went 11-for-20 with runners on base, and 9-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Five different Huskers recorded multi-hit efforts six different bats tallied RBIs.

What’s next for Nebraska baseball?

The Huskers continue their series with New Mexico State on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Drew Christo (4.88 ERA) will get the start for Nebraska against the Aggies. Sunday’s game is set for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch with Mason McConnaughey (1.65 ERA) on the hill.
