Can Notre Dame finish with the No. 1 recruiting class in 2023?

It’s still very early, and official visit season is just getting underway, but 2023 classes are starting to take shape. Notre Dame has 12 commits: one five star, 10 four stars and one three star to make up its top-ranked class. What’re the odds the Irish are No. 1 when all is said and done?

Hyde did some research, and the last time Notre Dame had the top recruiting class in the country was 1995.

“And they’ve only finished in the top five four times since then,” Hyde said. “You had 1998 with Bob Davie, Charlie Weis had back-to-back top-five classes from 2007-08, and then the big class in 2013.

“The odds of finishing No. 1? Georgia and Alabama are starting to creep up.”

Notre Dame signing the No. 1 class starts with earning a commitment from five-star quarterback Dante Moore. Additionally, the Irish are in the mix for five-star running back Richard Young, although he is a heavy Alabama favorite according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. More than likely, the wide receivers Notre Dame lands will be outside of the top 100.

“Eventually, it will drift down,” Hyde added.

However, Hyde still believes Notre Dame can sign a top-five or even top-three class, which would be huge for head coach Marcus Freeman.

“Top five for Notre Dame is awesome, and top three for Notre Dame is elite,” Hyde said. “The stats have shown that over the last couple of decades.”
