During his four-year Notre Dame career, Brock Wright hauled in just 7 passes for 78 yards with 1 touchdown. Playing in South Bend from 2017-20, it was difficult for Wright to become the Irish’s tight end No. 1 with fellow NFL players such as Cole Kmet, Tommy Tremble and Michael Mayer ahead of him.

But Notre Dame flexes its claim for Tight End U. when one of its backups becomes a mainstay in the NFL. Through three seasons with the Detroit Lions, he’s hauled in 43 passes for 424 yards with 7 touchdowns on 55 targets.

And he might be on the move.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported over the weekend that the San Francisco 49ers signed Wright, a restricted free agent, to a three-year, $12 million offer sheet.

“(It) includes $6 million guaranteed, per source,” reported Schefter. “Detroit tendered Wright with a one-year, $2.985 million offer, and now has five days to determine whether to match San Francisco’s offer sheet or lose its tight end without getting back any compensation.”

If the Lions want to keep Wright, it’ll have to match. If not, Wright will join former Irish offensive lineman Aaron Banks in San Francisco.

“We want to get all the information we can before making his decision. The more time we can spend with the schools he’s considering, the better we’ll be informed. Heck, if we could spend two weeks with everybody he’s highly considering, we would do it.”
