Notre Dame will lose all three of its starters from the 2022 weekend rotation. Graduate senior Austin Temple is set to sign an undrafted free agent deal with the Houston Astros.

Matt Freeman of Irish Sports Daily first reported the news. A source confirmed it with BlueandGold.com. Temple entered the transfer portal by July 1 to retain eligiblity at a new destination, but he earned a Master’s degree and is ready to embark on a professional pitching career.

Temple joins Friday night ace John Michael Bertrand and would-be rising senior Liam Simon as Irish weekend starters to leave the program this offseason. Both Bertrand and Simon were selected by the San Francisco Giants in this week’s MLB Draft. Simon went in the fifth round. Bertrand went with the last pick of the 10th.

Temple went 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA in 18 appearances, 15 of which he started. The Jacksonville transfer had 87 strikeouts, second to only Bertrand’s 111. New Irish head coach Shawn Stiffler has to piece together a weekend rotation for his first season at the helm next spring.
