JoJo Johnson, a rising sophomore cornerback at Notre Dame, has entered the transfer portal. He made the announcement on Tuesday on Twitter after sitting out the 2021 season due to a torn ACL suffered last summer.

“I would like to thank God for blessing me with my abilities and for the opportunity to share them with the world,” Johnson wrote on Twitter. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my journey and who will continue to support me through my next chapter.

“To my teammates, thank you for helping me get acclimated to the Notre Dame environment. I want to thank my coaches for always holding me accountable and teaching me to exceed limits I never thought possible.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at Notre Dame and have created memories that will last a lifetime. Having said that, I will be continuing my education and football career at another university. Stay tuned, this is just the beginning.”

Indiana native and former three star headed elsewhere

Johnson was recruited as a athlete and was the No. 12 player from Indiana and No. 728 player nationally in the 2021 class according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. The On3 Consensus also listed him as the No. 110 wide receiver in the class.

The three-star recruit attended Merrillville (Ind.) High and was originally committed to Cincinnati. Merrillville is the hometown of current 2023 Irish commit linebacker commit Drayk Bowen.

Cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens has two corners coming in via the 2022 class: Jaden Mickey and Benjamin Morrison. Safety Jayden Bellamy is also incoming and could potentially make the switch if needed. Ryan Barnes, Chance Tucker, Philip Riley, Clarence Lewis, Cam Hart and TaRiq Bracy are the other scholarship corners on the roster.

Johnson becomes 11th player to leave Notre Dame since September

In addition to Johnson, 10 other Notre Dame players have elected to finish their college football careers elsewhere since September, with the majority of them coming from the defense: safety Shayne Simon (Pittsburgh), linebacker Paul Moala (undecided), safety Khari Gee (Georgia Tech), safety Litchfield Ajavon (undecided), safety Caleb Offord (Buffalo) and safety KJ Wallace (undecided).

On the offensive side of the ball, three players have entered the transfer portal: quarterback Brendon Clark (ODU), wideout Lawrence Keys (Tulane) and offensive tackle Quinn Carroll (Minnesota).

Finally, punter Jay Bramblett is joining former Irish head coach Brian Kelly at LSU.
