Newsstand: Mike Brey wants to continue coaching after finishing season with Notre Dame

On Jan. 19, news broke that Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey would be “stepping away” from his post after the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
However, that doesn’t mean he’s completely retiring from coaching.
Stadium basketball analyst Jeff Goodman tweeted Tuesday that Brey informed him that he was not done coaching. Again, Brey’s time at Notre Dame will finish in a few weeks time, but where the 63-year-old veteran coach will be employed next is to be determined.
“Mike and I have talked often in recent years about a future transition in the program’s leadership and during our most recent conversation we reached the mutual conclusion that the end of this season represented the right time,” Notre Dame director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a statement a few weeks ago. “That Mike is the winningest coach in the 119-year history of Notre Dame men’s basketball speaks to his skill as a teacher of the game. His even greater legacy, however, lies in his achievements as an educator and mentor of the young men who played for him.

“In that sense, he represents this University as well as any coach I have worked with during my time at Notre Dame. And for that reason, I look forward to working with Mike to define his future role within Notre Dame athletics.”

Quote of the Day
“I’m a Catholic kid from Chicago. We had a lot of success in the Chicago area. I’ve got a lot of respect for that university. With that said, I have no interest. I’ve not pursued it, nor do I have any interest. Oklahoma is my home. The Sooners are my home.”
