Just when you thought the coaching cycle in college football was coming to a close, Jeff Hafley sent it for another spin by leaving his post as Boston College’s head coach to become the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. Two Notre Dame assistants were named candidates to replace Hafley by Chris Vannini of The Athletic.

Defensive coordinator Al Golden and defensive line coach Al Washington.

It seems like the Irish has been skating on thin ice with the former all offseason. It started when he was named a contender for the Syracuse job in November. The rumor mill has been abuzz ever since.

Vannini noted current Boston College athletics director Blake James was the AD at Miami when Golden was relieved of his duties as head coach there. Golden later unsuccessfully sued for breach of contract. The Irish might be fine — er, golden — on the Golden to BC front.

Washington, meanwhile, is an interesting name to throw out there. He’s a former Boston College football player who interviewed for the Eagles opening the last time it came open according to The Athletic. He was also a BC assistant from 2012-16.

It didn’t seem like he was in line for a jump to head coach at the end of the season, but sometimes the right situation comes calling when least expected.
