Notre Dame football jersey numbers: Changes, true freshmen, summer enrollees

Notre Dame updated its 2025 football roster for the summer on Monday. There are several jersey number changes worth taking a look at.

Blue & Gold broke down the Notre Dame jersey number changes into three different categories; changes for players who were already enrolled and/or suited up for the Fighting Irish in the spring, jersey numbers for players Notre Dame plucked from the transfer portal but did not enroll at the university until this summer and jersey numbers for true freshmen who did not enroll early and waited until this summer.

If a player is not listed in the following categories, he did not change his number from what it was in the spring to what it is now in the summer.

Returning number changes from 2024/spring ball

Sophomore wide receiver Cam Williams
Was: No. 17
New number: No. 5

Junior cornerback Christian Gray
Was: No. 29
New number: No. 6

Sophomore safety Tae Johnson
Was: No. 16
New number: No. 9

Graduate senior wide receiver Tyler Buchner (walk-on)
Was: No. 26
New number: No. 10*
*This is Buchner’s third number at Notre Dame; he wore No. 12 as a freshman and sophomore in 2021 and 2022.

Sophomore cornerback Leonard Moore
Was: No. 2*
New number: No. 15
*Moore wore No. 15 as an All-American true freshman, but he wore No. 2 during spring ball. He’s going back to the look he was so successful in as a first-year Notre Dame standout.

Freshman wide receiver Elijah Burress
Was: No. 16*
New number: No. 17
*Burress wore No. 16 during spring ball but has since taken No. 17, the same number his father, Plaxico, wore as a Super Bowl champion in the NFL.
