Former Irish golfer Taichi Kho made his major debut Thursday, becoming the first Notre Dame alum and first Hong Kong native to compete in the Open Championship.

Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick tweeted his support for Kho on Thursday morning as the class of 2022 graduate teed off at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Wirral, United Kingdom.

Kho finished 12-over 83 on Day 1, making headlines for a disastrous 18th hole. After an 8-over 43 on the front nine, he parred every hole from 10 to 16 and birdied 17. It looked like Kho would finish the day strong, but then came the “pot bunker” on hole 18.

He hit his third shot on the par 5 into the bunker, and he couldn’t get out. Not until his 10th shot on the hole did he finally sink it.

Kho will look to bounce back Friday on Day 2.

“I’m not afraid to get away from home,” Jones said. “The weather doesn’t really affect me either. So, anywhere, all over the country, wherever I see best is where I’ll go. So there’s no real close to home or far from home that’s like the deciding factor.”
