Newsstand: Syracuse men’s basketball transfer to have in-home visit with Notre Dame

Notre Dame men’s basketball has some roster reconstruction to do under new head coach Micah Shrewsberry. The Irish could bolster one of the many open scholarship spots with a transfer from Syracuse.
According to Jon Rothstein, Joseph Girard III will host Irish coaches for an in-home recruiting visit. Girard will also visit with Clemson and BYU, per Rothstein. Today marks the end of a dead period in men’s basketball recruiting. Coaches can have in-person contact with recruits from now through April 9. There is another dead period from April 10-13, but it opens back up between April 4 and May 17.
In four years at Syracuse, Girard averaged 13.2 points, 3.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game. He started in 123 of 125 appearances. As a senior this past season, he averaged a career-best 16.4 points per game on a career-best 40.3 percent shooting. He hit 38.1 percent of his shots from three-point range and 85.7 percent of his free throws.

There are only five scholarship players (Matt Zona, Tony Sanders Jr., JR Konieczny, Ven-Allen Lubin and incoming freshman Markus Burton) on the Irish roster going into 2023-24 because of a mass exodus to the portal. Shrewsberry needs a heavy haul from the transfer market. Bringing in a sharpshooter like Girard would be a good start.
