Two days after the end of the regular season, two Notre Dame players who started games in 2023 have accounted their intentions to enter the transfer portal. The latest is senior wide receiver Chris Tyree, who will be a graduate transfer.

In his first season at the position after converting to running back, Tyree finished with 26 receptions and led the Irish with 484 receiving yards.

“I would like to start by saying Thank You to the entire Notre Dame community for giving me the experience of a lifetime as a student-athlete,” Tyree said in an Instagram graphic. “I am especially grateful to my coaches, professors, friends and most importantly my teammates for making this journey unforgettable. My love for this university will never waiver, and Iw ill always be proud to say that I earned my degree from Notre Dame.

“The relationships that I’ve built over 4 years will be cherished for the rest of my life. Notre Dame will forever hold a special place in my heart.”

Tyree has one year of eligibility remaining.

A former four-star prospect from Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale, Tyree worked throughout the offseason to make the switch from running back to slot receiver. He spent time with Houston-based private wide receivers and tight ends coach Delfonte Diamond, and he put in extra hours at the facilities in South Bend with Irish wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey.

His efforts paid off, as Tyree was not just a gadget player like many expected him to be in Notre Dame’s offense. He was the best deep threat on the team, averaging 18.6 yards per reception and scoring 3 touchdowns.

Tyree played in all 12 games this season, making 5 starts. He finished with 276 snaps, 175 of which came on pass plays.

In three seasons as a running back, Tyree rushed 232 times for 1,161 yards and 8 touchdowns. He only carried the ball 3 times, totaling -1 yards, in 2023.

With Tyree likely on his way out, Notre Dame will likely rely on freshmen Jaden Greathouse and Jordan Faison at the slot receiver position. Greathouse dealt with a hamstring injury midway through the season, but he showed serious potential in the slot early on. Faison, who came to Notre Dame on a lacrosse scholarship looks like an explosive playmaker himself after he was activated for the final six games.

Earlier on Monday, Notre Dame graduate defensive end Nana Osafo-Mensah announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal as well. Wide receiver and defensive end will be critical needs for the Irish entering 2024.
