The summer offseason is in full swing, and Lettermen Row is trying to survive it with our annual Position Week breakdowns. By the time all nine units and coaching staff at Ohio State have been covered, training camp and media days will nearly have arrived, and the return of football in the Horseshoe will be just around the corner. We’re continuing with our sixth positional week — and first on the defensive side — with a unit primed for a breakout season: the Buckeyes defensive line.

COLUMBUS — Ohio State watched the too-early NFL mock drafts roll in shortly after the draft concluded in April.

Those way-too-early draft previews included Buckeyes defensive ends, most notably J.T. Tuimoloau, and defensive tackles such as Mike Hall and Tyleik Williams.

That’s a long-winded way of saying that the talent on hand in the Buckeyes defensive line room already has NFL scouts attention with eyes on next spring. But the Buckeyes are focused and locked in on this upcoming season, one that could be a special year for the defensive line room as it aims to get back to dominance.

Ohio State hasn’t been at that level for the last few seasons. With the top-end players suiting up in the defensive trenches this fall for the Buckeyes, the expectations need to be met. It’s on them to go out and do it.

Lettermen Row’s Spencer Holbrook, Andy Backstrom and Tim May are back for another breakdown, this time about the Buckeyes defensive line room as part of Defensive Line Week at Lettermen Row. The crew breaks down the Ohio State depth chart, the candidates for playing time, potential sleeper picks and more in the latest Lettermen Row video presented by Byers Auto! The expectations for this unit are extremely high. And offensive line coach Justin Frye can’t wait to continue what the line showed in spring ball when the Buckeyes get to training camp in August.

“I’m excited to get into it and see how it all pans out,” Frye said in late May. “Because there’s a lot of competition, really at all five spots.”
