Aaliyah Chavez officially signs with OU

Aaliyah Chavez is officially a Sooner.
The No. 1 women’s basketball player in the country signed with Oklahoma on Thursday, coach Jennie Baranczyk announced. Chavez committed to OU on March 25, picking the Sooners over Texas, South Carolina, UCLA and others. A 5-foot-11 five-star guard from Lubbock, Texas, Chavez is the highest-rated recruit in program history.
At Monetary High School, Chavez averaged 34.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.7 steals per game her senior season. She finished her high school career with 4,796 points, 1,279 rebounds, 771 assists and 476 steals, hitting 636 3-pointers across 150 games. Chavez recorded nine 50-point games in her career and finished 14th on ESPN’s all-time scoring list.
She joins Keziah Lofton (No. 50 ESPN) and Brooklyn Stewart (No. 66 ESPN) in Oklahoma’s 15th-ranked recruiting class. She also joins a team fresh off a Sweet 16 appearance that returns several starters, including Payton Verhulst, Raegan Beers and Sahara Williams.
“This team has done an amazing job of growing to be able to attract some attention from really high-level players,” OU coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “I think it’s because of the culture of this program and the foundation. So we’re excited about continuing to evolve as a program.”

Chavez’s recruitment was a rollercoaster, with major programs pursuing her. But ultimately, she chose the Sooners because of Baranczyk and her style of play.
“They have great coaches, coaches that I’ve been talking to since I was in eighth grade,” Chavez said on ESPN. “And just a great playing style. They match how I want to play. I want to play fast, and that’s why I chose it.”
