OU came up with the goods in the victory against Michigan, and quarterback John Mateer was recognized for his efforts.

Mateer, who was sensational against the Wolverines, was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

It is the first SEC weekly honor for OU this season.

“I’m proud of John,” head coach Brent Venables said. “Again, he made some amazing plays—in the first half when he broke some tackles and threw some lasers. I don’t know if it was fun to watch, but it sure was for me. John showed his acumen as a runner as well, and that’s what good players can do.

“Quarterbacks that are playing at the highest level, they can throw it and they can run it—designed and have the ability to improvise, make plays, extend plays and throw the ball down the field. I thought our guys did a great job competing in a lot of those situations; we work scramble drill every week.”

Mateer completed 21 of 34 passes for 270 yards with a touchdown and an interception. But he showed his toughness. If OU fans were wondering how tough he would be, the Michigan game showed.

He rushed 19 times for 74 yards and added two more scores on the ground.

Mateer has thrown for 662 yards in his first two games for OU. That is the most by any OU quarterback through two contests since Josh Heupel in 1999.

“The more and more you play, the more and more you start understanding situations in the game,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said. “He’s seen a lot. Last season, we saw a lot of different situations that popped up. So there’s not a lot of moments he hasn’t been introduced to. And he understands how to navigate them and put us in the best position to be successful.

“I loved his response tonight, after good series or good plays, or bad series and bad plays, I loved how he responded every step of the way. Just bringing confidence to everybody on the team there on the sideline. But again, I’ll continue to say about his team. His leadership keeps growing and growing and growing. So, yeah, he’s a special kid. Really special.”

No. 13 OU (2-0) is at Temple (2-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
