SPRING, Texas – For elite recruits the track record of following in their family’s footsteps is often hard to overcome. And for Texas legacy Landon Rink, the son of former Longhorn defensive lineman Shane Rink, the pull to Austin was real in childhood. But as he spoke with SCOOPHD he admitted the Longhorns are far from his current thoughts. In fact, Texas’s two most heated rivals are heavily involved in his upcoming decision.

Rink is open to the reality that he is both unlikely to end up at Texas as well as having very real interest in Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

“I slimmed it down to about 12 schools but I’d say at the top it’s four or five. Texas A&M, OU, Ohio State, Penn State, and maybe Miami or USC,” Rink recently said.

“It is pretty crazy, [when I was] younger, I probably would have thought I would go to Texas. It just wasn’t the right fit for me and I want to go to the place that best fits me and A&M and OU and those other schools are what I see fitting me best.”

On Wednesday Rink went a step further announcing he’s nearing a decision between three finalists – including the Sooners and Aggies.

He also spoke about the Sooners and his relationship with both Todd Bates and Brent Venables.

“I talk to coach Bates all the time.” he said. “I just talk to them all the time I was in Galveston (recently) and coach Venables facetimed me and asked me what I was doing. [And] coach Bates is my guy.”

For all of the recruiting talk the thing Rink was most excited about was the invite to the Under Armour All-American game that he received following a strong camp performance.

“I’m ecstatic right now. I’m really excited. I’ve been going to these camps since I was an eighth grader dreaming of getting an invite. Obviously I’m going,” he beamed.

Rink was well worth the recognition as he dominated throughout the day. There are a lot of opinions on him as a player but what does Rink think makes his game special?

“I feel like my explosiveness, my strength, and my get off. Also my technique, I feel like I’m more advanced than some people. My dad helps me with that. He has been training me up since I was eight or nine.”
