Dana Altman intends to continue coaching the Oregon men’s basketball team beyond the 2023-24 season.

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Altman was asked about a report indicating that he might retire at the end of this season. He steadfastly shot down the claim.

“I have no idea who said that. I’m not sure who said it; I know I didn’t. I have talked to nobody. So, whoever’s saying that it’s pure speculation,” Altman said. “I’m not going anywhere. Unless this school tells me I’m not here. But, no. I’m not retiring — that’s for sure.”

Altman, 65, is in his 14th season as head coach at Oregon. He captured his 750th career win when UO beat rival Oregon State on Feb. 28 this season.

For the third straight year, the Ducks have struggled for consistency — in large part due to injuries. They are 19-10 on the year and appear set to miss the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season, unless they win the Pac-12 Tournament in March.

For the majority of the year, Oregon has been without senior guard Jesse Zarzuela, junior forward Nate Bittle, senior guard Keeshawn Barthelemy, and freshman forward Mookie Cook due to injury or illness. All-conference senior N’Faly Dante missed a large chunk of the season due to due to a knee injury.

Altman’s contract, which currently pays him $3.75 million per year, runs through the 2027-28 season.

Oregon will close out the regular season this week when it hosts Colorado at 6 p.m. PT on March 7 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene. The Ducks will then host Utah on March 9 at 4 p.m.

The Pac-12 Tournament is slated to begin on March 13 in Las Vegas.
