Penn State head coach Mike Rhoades saw what he wanted for his program on Wednesday night when hosting Michigan State at the Bryce Jordan Center. The issue, of course, being that what he wanted for his Nittany Lions was exhibited on the sideline at the other end of the court.

Dropping an 80-72 decision to the Spartans, one in which the Nittany Lions dug a hole in the first half from which they were unable to emerge, Rhoades’ wish list was long.

“We got beat today by a team with a culture. And it’s a well-established culture as we all know about. And it’s probably the best in the Big Ten,” he said. “That’s what we got to get to someday. That’s what we got to emulate. Not enough juice in the first half, flat, stood around too much, turnovers that led to easy baskets, transition baskets. You give a team that was on the road confidence and easy baskets, it gets them going and that got them going.

“We had some fight in the second half. Not enough. Too far behind. Throughout this year, we’ve showed that we have some really good basketball in us. It’s won us some games in the Big Ten. We’re not an easy out. But we’re not good enough to beat programs with real culture, great culture. That’s where we got to fight to get to and today was an example of that.”

Saturday afternoon, they’ll encounter a program with its own unique cultural strength. Visiting a Nebraska program that is 15-1 at home this season, with an unbeaten mark of 7-0 against Big Ten competition in the venue, the Nittany Lions will attempt to continue their own recent trend reversal. Knocking off Rutgers and Indiana in successive road games two weeks ago, Penn State will attempt to improve to 4-9 in games played outside of the Bryce Jordan Center this season.

Injury report

Penn State has two absences for Saturday’s game, both highly notable.

At the top, Kanye Clary is listed as OUT on the official availability report from the Big Ten. He missed two games due to a concussion two weeks ago but returned to action and has played in the Nittany Lions’ three most recent games. The reason behind his absence is unspecified.

Demetrius Lilley, meanwhile, is also officially OUT for Saturday’s game. He has missed the past two games with an unspecified injury.

Puff Johnson returned to action on Wednesday in the Nittany Lions’ loss to Michigan State after a two-game injury absence. He finished with eight points in 19 minutes. That included two made 3-pointers.
