Penn State signee Evan Mahaffey‘s stock has been steadily rising over the last year. Now, the Class of 2022 wing has earned a place inside On3’s updated top-150 rankings.

Mahaffey comes in at No. 147, joining fellow signee Jameel Brown, who stayed put at No. 137.

Mahaffey is also ranked as the No. 21 shooting guard in the class and the No. 6 prospect out of Ohio.

Playing for Cincinnati basketball powerhouse Archbishop Moeller High School, Mahaffey averaged 15.8 points per game during his senior season. He shot 64 percent from the floor and averaged seven rebounds per contest.

Known for his proficiency as a defender, the 6-foot-6 Mahaffey also concluded the 24-game season with 37 steals and 37 blocks.

“He uses his length to block shots, can run, can really, really move, can guard different guys,” Penn State assistant coach Mike Farrelly said. “He’s going to be a weapon for us defensively because of his ability to guard many different positions.

“He can protect the rim but also pursue the basketball and harass the ball-handler.”

Speaking to BWI following Mahaffey’s commitment last summer, Moeller coach Carl Kremer noted that Mahaffey’s challenge as a senior would be to become an assertive scorer.

Nearly doubling his scoring average from his junior season while maintaining his sparking efficiency, it’s safe to say that Mahaffey responded to that challenge well.

“He’s going to be a finisher,” Farrelly said. “He’s going to score inside and out and fill many different roles for us…So somebody that we’re excited to get our hands on.”

Penn State’s Class of 2022 now sits 57th nationally according to the On3 Consensus — and is the sixth-best recruiting class in the Big Ten.

Penn State signee Jameel Brown claims postseason accolade

Still the highest-ranked signee in Penn State’s 2022 class, Jameel Brown remained at No. 137 in this rankings update.

He did, however, pick up an accolade, named to the Pennsylvania All-State Non-PIAA First Team.

The Westtown product is primarily known for his excellent shooting ability, something the Nittany Lions are banking on to make an impact in 2022-23.

“When he enters the gym he’s ready to shoot,” assistant coach Adam Fisher said.

“He is a basketball player who is going to come in right away and make an impact on this team.”
