Why SMU needed to win an AAC Championship before joining the ACC

The 2024 SMU Football schedule was released Wednesday night on the ACC Network as the Mustangs race toward their first season as ACC members.

Notably, SMU doesn’t have a full schedule yet. The Mustangs are looking for a 12th opponent after Vanderbilt skirted away from a series with the Mustangs, in particular, canceling the 2024 matchup in Nashville.

SMU does face two Power Five opponents in non-conference play right now before heading into its first season of ACC play, which includes facing the 2023 ACC Champions.

The Mustangs open the 2024 season on Aug. 31 inside Gerald J. Ford Stadium against Houston Christian. Next up, SMU will host BYU on Fri., Sept. 6 in a rematch of the 2022 New Mexico Bowl.

On Sept. 21, SMU cranks up another edition of the Battle for the Iron Skillet against TCU. Head coach Rhett Lashlee is looking to win his first Iron Skillet as the head man in charge and will be inside Ford Stadium when he and his team take aim against Sonny Dykes’ Horned Frogs.

Florida State, the marquee home matchup for SMU this season, is set for Sat., Sept. 28. The Seminoles went undefeated in the 2023 regular season, winning the ACC. After an injury to star quarterback Jordan Travis, Mike Norvell’s squad was snubbed from the College Football Playoff. The depleted Seminoles were drubbed by Georgia in the Orange Bowl, 63-3. The Seminoles will likely be the preseason ACC favorite once again.

SMU drew a road matchup against the likely second-best team, according to many early 2024 ACC polls, Louisville. The Cardinals, once brief members with SMU of the Big East, will host the Mustangs on Sat., Oct. 5.

SMU heads to Stanford on Sat., Oct. 19 for a highly-anticipated first trip to the West Coast against one of its fellow ACC newbies. The Cardinal lead the series, 1-0, with the win coming in 1936 over the Mustangs.

In what’ll be filled with plenty of storylines between the coaching staffs, SMU heads to Duke on Sat., Oct. 26. Lashlee worked for new Blue Devils head coach Manny Diaz. Duke offensive coordinator Jonny Brewer spent the past two seasons on Lashlee’s staff as quarterbacks coach.

Pitt rolls into Ford Stadium on Sat., Nov. 2.

Boston College will head to Dallas on Sat., 16. The Golden Eagles beat the Mustangs in the Fenway Bowl to cut SMU’s bid for a 12-win campaign short. Less than a year later, BC will visit Ford Stadium.

For an East Coast trip, SMU heads to Virginia on Sat., Nov. 23.

The Mustangs host Cal on Sat., Nov. 30. The Golden Bears . SMU leads the series, 1-0, with the lone matchup coming in 1957.

Game times and TV coverage will be announced at later dates during the season.
