SMU’s fourth all-time leading rusher, James ran for 4,742 yards and 45 touchdowns on 775 carries. He also added 51 receptions for 650 yards and three scores as he earned three All-Southwest Conference selections forming The Pony Express backfield with Dickerson. A former NFL Pro Bowler with the New England Patriots, he was inducted into the SMU Hall of Fame in 2011. He helped the Mustangs to Southwest Conference Championships in 1981 and 1982.
