A pair of Mustangs enter the NCAA transfer portal

SMU QB Keldric Luster and WR Randy Reece announced they will enter the NCAA transfer portal. Luster has three years of eligibility, while Reece has four years left.
After redshirting his first season at SMU, Keldric Luster finished the 2024 season 1/3 passing for zero yards and ran for 50 yards on 11 carries. Luster primarily served as the third-string quarterback behind Kevin Jennings and Preston Stone. Standing at 5’10 225 pounds, Luster is a capable runner with a strong arm.
When asked who his favorite prospect in the 2023 recruiting class was, Luster answered, ““Randy Reece I would say. We played a lot of 7-on-7 together so I’m excited to see it correlate over to the season.”
Former Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff wide receiver Randy Reece enters the transfer portal after redshirting this past season at SMU. Reece greyshirted his first season at SMU after suffering a torn ACL. So after a couple of years, Reece still has all four years of eligibility remaining.

What this means for SMU:
Luster served as the backup to Kevin Jennings all spring. However, Luster entering the transfer portal speaks to the positive development of early enrollee Ty Hawkins. With Tyler Van Dyke still recovering from his leg injury, Ty Hawkins now moves up the depth chart and becomes the backup quarterback.
With the loss of Randy Reece, SMU now only has Jaxson Lavender in the slot. Lavender has shown more promise in the spring but will need to continue to progress. SMU also remains in the market for a slot wide receiver in the transfer portal. The Mustangs are currently hosting one of the best wide receivers in the portal for an official visit.
