Ahmad Walker discusses SMU's improved defense, No. 1 AAC ranking

SMU linebacker Ahmad Walker is among the leaders for this revamped defense that sits atop the AAC rankings statistically right now. Playing plenty of snaps for Scott Symons in the middle, the transfer linebacker is enjoying his time on the Hilltop.

“It was really fun being part of a group that just put a lot of effort into just getting to the ball, having fun, doing our jobs. That’s a great thing to be a part of. It just feels good to be part of this.”

This season, the former Liberty starter is playing under the direction of linebackers coach Maurice Crum while Symons leads the safeties. Walker playing in Symons’ defense is what he wanted to do when he transferred to SMU.

“Coach Symons told me he was gonna bring in another linebacker coach,” Walker said. “As long as he was on the staff, I was pretty good. I just know what the type of guy coach Symons is. It’s everything that I wanted it to be. I’m having fun playing, so I’m just having fun.”

On Friday against Temple, SMU’s depth was shown a bit as Chris Adimora nabbed a late interception. It just showed how much depth the Mustangs have at the position, which helps others stay fresh.

“It’s been fun because, you know, those guys all support me when I’m all making plays and everything,” Walker said. “Just seeing them continue to grow, seeing them make big plays and stuff like that, like on Saturday when Chris made that pick, I’m pretty sure I was about jumping out of my shoes. Just seeing everybody make plays, just being positive, that just uplifts everything, just uplifts the whole group.”

On the season, Walker has 33 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass breakup. This weekend, SMU hosts Tulsa at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU. Check out the full interview with Walker at the top.
