SMU landed another transfer addition on Saturday when Kansas running back Velton Gardner announced he was transferring to SMU. After three seasons with the Jayhawks, he posted “Let’s Work” on Twitter with a commitment graphic.

While Gardner did sign with Grambling originally, SMU hosted him for practice this spring. Despite SMU landing Alabama running back transfer Camar Wheaton, Gardner remained a target and filled a relatively unexpected void on the roster when Ulysses Bentley transferred to Ole Miss.

Velton Gardner, a former three-star recruit from Dallas (Tex.) Skyline, was the starter at running back in each of the Jayhawks’ first three games in 2021, running for 56 yards on 29 carries. He was Kansas’ leading rusher with 325 yards as a sophomore in the 2020 season.

A high school quarterback, Velton Gardner threw for 2,459 yards and 26 touchdowns as a senior at Skyline in 2018. He also ran for 842 yards and 14 scores. According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, he was the No. 8 overall athlete and No. 99 prospect in Texas.
