Pair of SMU Mustangs named to Outland Trophy Watch List

DALLAS (SMU)– SMU offensive lineman Justin Osborne and defensive tackle Elijah Chatman were named to the 2023 Outland Trophy preseason watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced on Tuesday.

Osborne and Chatman are two of 89 selected for the annual award presented to the nation’s most outstanding interior lineman.

Last season, Osborne earned second-team nods on the All-AAC, DCTF All-Texas, and Phill Steele All-AAC teams after making 11 starts for the Mustangs and playing in all 13 games as a junior. Osborne was named to the 2023 preseason All-AAC Athlon Sports First Team, Phil Steele preseason All-AAC Third Team, DCTF All-Texas First Team, East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 list, and CFN First Team All-AAC Team. 

The recipient of the 2023 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN in December. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 10, 2024.
