SMU landed a big commitment as the program flipped 2024 Tyler (Tex.) athlete Derrick McFall away from UCLA. The Mustangs hosted him on an official visit earlier this fall and that laid the groundwork for the flip as McFall decommitted from the Bruins.

The four-star prospect committed to the Bruins in August despite not visiting Los Angeles.

SMU running backs coach Khenon Hall kept up his pursuit of the 5-10, 185-pound prospect throughout the course of the fall. The Mustangs got an official visit and impressed him and his family.

He’s a versatile prospect that could play running back, wide receiver or other skill spots. Playing for California Power, he made waves this offseason on the camp circuit.

He ended his season with 128 rushing yards (averaging eight yards per carry), hauled in 48 catches for 818 yards (17 yards per catch), and added 198 yards on seven kickoff returns, which put him over the 1,000-yard mark for all-purpose yards.

When McFall committed to UCLA, he picked the future Big Ten program over Colorado and Washington. Louisville, Nebraska, Texas A&M and others also recruited him throughout his process.

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, McFall is the No. 371 overall prospect, No. 60 wide receiver in the nation and No. 60 prospect in Texas.

McFall is the ninth commitment for the Mustangs in the 2024 recruiting class, which climbs up in the ACC rankings with the addition of the East Texas standout.

SMU is having success on the field as well this fall, sitting at 10-2 overall and 8-0 in American Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs head to the Atlantic Coast Conference this summer and McFall is a key piece to the future now. Up first is an AAC Championship Game appearance for SMU against Tulane on Saturday.
